Public Library400 Main St. The mission statement for the Brawley Public Library is: The Brawley Public Library contributes to the enrichment of the community by providing books and services that support literacy, lifelong learning and encourage the pursuit of knowledge. It offers traditional and innovative library services to all members of the community, in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Collections include resources with educational, informational and recreational value that respond to the interests of a diverse community. Trained staff serves the people in a patient, courteous and helpful manner. They meet on the second Wednesday of each month and are: Dixie Smith, President Projects A new library branch will be opening in October, 2008. It will be adjacent to a community center and will be on the grounds of the Imperial County Office of Education’s Del Rio School at the corner of “I “and Eastern Ave. It will be open after regular school hours on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Free English-language one-on-one tutoring for adults who wish to improve their reading, writing, or math skills are offered in the library. Tutors are always needed and free training and support is offered. Volunteering only takes two hours per week and can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Volunteers can ask for more information at the circulation desk. Library Director Marjo Mello was promoted from Assistant Director to Library Director on February 18, 1992. She is very involved in adult literacy and was a board member of Literacy Volunteers of America/Imperial Valley for eight years. She has received special recognition from the California State Library for her contributions to literacy. She has garnered more than two million dollars in grants for the library during her career and has overseen the expansion and renovation of the library that includes the children’s wing and Rotary Room. The Brawley Public Library Board of Trustees nominated her and she was awarded the California Library Association, CALTAC Librarian award for 1999. She is a firm believer in the community of Brawley and appreciates the donations, time and efforts of volunteers, as well as the enthusiasm of the residents of Brawley towards their library.
